DIY Stocking Hanger for $10 (Or Less!)

I am so excited to share this project with all of you! I had been looking on Pinterest for a few weeks for options for stocking hangers – since Dan and I live in a small apartment, which means no fireplace and no mantle. As fun as it would have been to hang a shelf or something to use a typical “stocking hanger” on, I decided that I wanted something that would be unique to our little home.

When I started looking for ideas, consistently the idea of using a coat rack as a stocking hanger came up. What a great idea, I thought. But, how can I get a coat rack for cheap? The answer..?

Goodwill. Yes. That simple. I found this coat rack (and I have to add that it’s short so it works perfectly with our space) for less than $2 at Goodwill after searching for a few weeks.

As you can see, it was a little beat up and needed some serious love. An easy sanding and painting took it from a discolored Goodwill dud to this amazing stocking hanger that fits perfectly for a small space with no fireplace or mantle!

(Don’t mind the bit of a mess or SNL on the tv) But really, it was that simple. We started by sanding down the wood so the paint will hold longer.

And I used a sponge brush from Michael’s to apply the paint. As you can kind of see in this photo, the paint is a really cool grey that has some purple-ish hints to it. I loooooove the color. It looks really nice with the faux fur stockings Dan and I got months ago (what can I say, we love the holidays)! After applying a couple layers, we let it dry overnight.

I’m not the best painter in the world, but from far away it looks nice!

It’s that simple, folks. Paired with this awesome fake fireplace space heater from The Home Depot, it really gives our space a comfortable holiday feel. And you barely need ANY paint to get this done.

Anyone else have any creative small space hacks for the holidays? Leave your ideas in the comments! Can’t wait to hear from all of you.
